Film Office
The BIRMINGHAM-JEFFERSON FILM OFFICE promotes the Birmingham region in the development of film, video, and multimedia production. In doing so, it acts as a liaison between production entities and local governments and communities by educating, setting standards of professionalism, and serving as a clearinghouse for production information. The Film Office promotes the growth of our regional production infrastructure and proportionally increases the economic impact of the industry throughout the region.
Since its creation in October 2005, the Birmingham-Jefferson Film Office has assisted in the completed filming of 84 film-related projects (a winning percentage of 72% of total projects). The total direct spending revenue of $11,449,500 has generated 1047 technical crew jobs with 274 days of filming.
The BIRMINGHAM-JEFFERSON FILM OFFICE is a cost-effective investment of public dollars. Its efforts lead directly to employment of local crew, talent, and service providers, as well as additional revenue to our regional economy. These efforts are felt throughout the local communities, touching many businesses and individuals. Additionally, having central Alabama displayed both theatrically and on television creates a tremendous increase in tourism dollars for the area. The Film Office adds tremendous value to the region’s total economic/tourism development package.
The BIRMINGHAM-JEFFERSON FILM OFFICE competes with 320 other Film Commissions worldwide for the millions of dollars spent annually in “on-location” production. Furthermore, film commissions are a recognized entity within the film, television and multimedia industry. Their presence and level of development and resources determine whether or not production companies will consider bringing production to a particular region. This highly competitive environment makes the Birmingham-Jefferson Film Office an economic necessity, as well as an integral ingredient in attracting this “clean industry” from out-of-state production. Likewise, it is an important economic engine that nurtures the development and growth of our own regional production infrastructure.
